Infertility in Males and Females

Definition:

Infertility is the inability to conceive after one year (or more) of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. It may result from issues in either the male, the female, or both partners.

Female Infertility

Causes (Modern Perspective):

  • Ovulatory Disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation (e.g., PCOS).
  • Tubal Blockage: Due to infections or surgery (e.g., Pelvic Inflammatory Disease).
  • Endometriosis: Growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus, affecting fertility.
  • Uterine Abnormalities: Fibroids, polyps, or congenital malformations.
  • Hormonal Imbalance: Thyroid disorders, high prolactin, etc.
  • Age-related Decline: Egg quality and number decrease after age 35.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Stress, poor diet, smoking, alcohol, obesity.

    • Signs and Symptoms:

    • Irregular or missed periods
    • Painful periods or pelvic pain
    • Abnormal vaginal discharge
    • Difficulty tracking ovulation
    • History of miscarriage
    • Hormonal issues (e.g., acne, facial hair in PCOS)

    Causes :

    • Vata Imbalance: Disrupts movement of egg and implantation.
    • Artavakshaya: Decreased menstrual flow or poor quality ovum.
    • Beeja Dushti: Defect in female reproductive seed (ovum).
    • Srotorodha: Blockage in reproductive channels.
    • Agni Mandya: Poor digestion affecting tissue nourishment.
    • Rasa and Shukra Dhatu Weakness: Inadequate reproductive tissue formation.
    • Manasika Dosha: Stress, fear, or grief affecting fertility.

    Male Infertility

    Causes (Modern Perspective):

    • Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia)
    • Poor Sperm Motility or Morphology
    • Varicocele: Enlarged veins in the scrotum affecting sperm production.
    • Infections: STDs or prostatitis.
    • Hormonal Imbalance: Low testosterone, pituitary disorders.
    • Ejaculation Issues: Premature, retrograde, or obstructed ejaculation.
    • Heat Exposure: Frequent hot tubs, tight underwear.
    • Lifestyle: Smoking, alcohol, stress, obesity, poor diet.

    Signs and Symptoms:

    • Difficulty in conceiving with partner
    • Erectile dysfunction or reduced libido
    • Pain or swelling in testicular area
    • Low semen volume
    • Hormonal signs: low energy, hair loss, reduced muscle mass

    Causes :

    • Shukra Kshaya: Depletion or weakness of semen (Shukra Dhatu).
    • Shukra Dushti: Impaired sperm quality.
    • Vata or Pitta Aggravation: Affects semen formation and ejaculation.
    • Agnimandya: Poor digestion leading to weak dhatus.
    • Viruddha Ahara: Intake of incompatible foods weakening reproductive strength.
    • Excessive Vyayama (Exercise), Sex, or Stress: Leads to loss of vitality.
